The burden of allergic disease
Allergic diseases pose a significant health burden on a global scale. It is estimated that between 10–30% of the global population suffers from allergic rhinitis alone. Despite important advances in pharmacotherapy treatment options, the prevalence, complexity, and severity of these allergic diseases continues to increase worldwide.
Challenges of allergy research
Researchers work tirelessly on new therapies to help ease the global burden of allergic disease. However, clinical trials can be complex and costly due to variability inherent in multi-centre field studies. This variability—caused by a lack of control over each patient’s allergen exposure—can often lead to expensive and ineffective studies.
